Interactive Kiosks: The Software, the Hardware and the Bill

An interactive kiosk is mostly a software decision with a box around it. Pick what the screen has to do first, because a check-in app that prints badges needs a different enclosure than a menu someone scrolls. The hardware side starts with a Samsung panel at $780 (43") or $1,199 (55").

Five jobs a digital interactive kiosk does

These are the five kiosk modes CrownTV lists on its kiosk program page, with the systems it says it connects to out of the box (checked October 22, 2026). The panel column is what we'd start with.

Other systems are scoped in the quote; CrownTV says that typically takes two to four weeks.

Three ways to get the software on the screen

  • Your web app, locked down. If your ordering or check-in flow already runs in a browser, the kiosk opens that URL full screen, hides the address bar and resets after an idle timer. Cheapest and fastest, and our first suggestion when the app already exists.
  • A native or PWA app. When you need a camera, a printer or offline mode, a React or progressive web app gets built for the kiosk. More work, more control.
  • A third-party kiosk product. Visitor management and patient intake vendors sell their own kiosk software. The kiosk just has to meet their hardware list, and we check it against that list before we quote.

Two settings decide whether people trust the kiosk: idle timeout and session reset. On a patient intake kiosk, a 3-minute timeout can leave the last patient's insurance details on screen for the next person in line. Set it short, test it, and make the reset clear the form, not just go back a page.

If the screen only needs to show content and never take input, you don't need any of this. The kiosk displays page covers non-touch housings, and a Tizen player built into the QMC panel runs the loop on its own.

Interactive kiosk questions

What makes a kiosk interactive?

Software that responds to the person in front of it. Usually that means touch, but a QR code that opens a phone flow or a card reader also counts. A screen that only plays a loop is a digital sign in a housing.

How much does an interactive kiosk cost?

CrownTV lists installed interactive kiosks at $4,500 to $9,500 per unit, including hardware, install and first-year software (checked October 22, 2026). Buying the parts yourself starts with the panel, $780 for a QM43C, plus a quoted enclosure, overlay and player.

Can an interactive kiosk run our existing web app?

Yes, and it is the cheapest route. The kiosk opens one URL full screen, blocks everything else, and resets after an idle timeout so the next person does not see the last session.

Does an interactive kiosk need internet?

Almost always. Ordering, check-in and intake apps talk to a server. Plan a wired Ethernet drop at the kiosk and treat Wi-Fi as the backup.

How long does it take to get an interactive kiosk live?

CrownTV quotes 4 to 6 weeks from signed quote: site survey in week 1, build in weeks 2 to 4, install in week 5, launch and training in week 6. Connecting to a system it does not already support usually adds two to four weeks of scoping.

Who supports the kiosk after it is installed?

If CrownTV installs it, CrownTV does: its kiosk page lists a 24/7 SLA with 2-hour response and 48-hour player replacement. If you buy the panel from us and build the rest yourself, Samsung covers the panel for 3 years and your app vendor covers the app.
