Kiosk vs tablet

Kiosk vs Tablet Stand: When a Tablet Is Enough

We sell kiosk panels, and we'll still tell you a tablet on a locking stand is the right answer more often than people expect. If one person at a time uses it at arm's length, a tablet does the job for a fraction of a kiosk. Here is how we decide.

Buy the tablet if

  • It's a visitor sign-in at a small office front desk.
  • Patients check in at a counter where staff can see it.
  • It's a short-term event or a pilot to prove the app works.
  • Nobody needs to read it from more than a couple of feet away.

Lock it to one app (Guided Access on an iPad, or single-app mode through your device management tool) and put the stand at a height where the screen sits between 15 and 48 inches off the floor. That's the ADA reach range, and plenty of floor stands put the tablet above it.

Buy the kiosk if

  • It has to pull people in from across a room or a concourse.
  • It shows a map, a menu or a directory that won't fit on 13 inches.
  • It runs open to close in a public space, every day.
  • It needs a card reader, printer or camera built in.

Pressed Juicery's kiosk at Moynihan Train Hall is the extreme case: a 3,000-nit OM55B in a birch enclosure facing a train station concourse. A tablet would disappear there. See the kiosk configurator for panel prices, or touch screen kiosks for what touch adds.

The middle ground

Two setups sit between a tablet and a full kiosk. One is a plain commercial display on a floor stand, like the one at Exhale Spa's entrance, with no touch at all: it shows the check-in QR code and people use their phones. The other is a tablet for input mounted below a wall display for content, which keeps the touch part cheap and replaceable. CrownTV's kiosk page also lists a 22-inch countertop unit (checked October 22, 2026), which fits counters where a 43" won't. Ask us for a quote on either.

Kiosk vs tablet questions

Is a tablet stand cheaper than a kiosk?

Yes, by a wide margin. A tablet and a locking stand cost a fraction of a kiosk, where the 43" panel alone is $780 before the enclosure. If a tablet does the job, buy the tablet.

When is a tablet stand the right choice?

When one person at a time uses it at arm's length and nobody needs to see it from across the room: visitor sign-in at a small office, a check-in at a counter, a survey at a front desk.

When should I buy a kiosk instead?

When it has to be seen from a distance, show content while nobody is using it, survive a public space all day, or show a map or menu too big for 13 inches.

Can a tablet be locked to one app like a kiosk?

Yes. iPad has Guided Access for one app, and both iPad and Android tablets can be locked to a single app through device management software. That is the same idea as a kiosk's locked browser.

Do ADA reach rules apply to a tablet stand?

Yes. Anything a visitor operates should sit between 15 and 48 inches above the floor under the 2010 ADA Standards. Many floor stands put the tablet higher than that, so check the stand height.

Will a tablet last running all day?

Tablets are consumer devices and their makers do not publish a 24/7 rating the way Samsung does for the QMC. Plugged in all day for years, the battery is usually the first part to fail. Budget to replace them.
